Notre Dame School

We are located here in Kanchipuram, right in the 631501 area. Most people know this town for the temples and the silk, but for us, it is just home where the school sits. The building has been here for a while and it gets quite warm in the afternoons, so we try to keep the fans running all the time. Our teachers come in early every morning, usually before the students start arriving in their yellow buses or on the back of their parents' scooters. It gets noisy when the bell rings for lunch. You can hear the kids running around the corridors and the sound of steel tiffin boxes opening. We have a playground that is mostly dust and hard ground, but the kids do not seem to mind when they are playing football or just chasing each other around. The staff room is a bit cramped with piles of notebooks waiting to be checked, and there is always someone making tea in the corner. We don't have fancy glass walls or central air conditioning, just regular classrooms with blackboards and wooden desks that have seen many years of use. Sometimes the electricity goes off and we just open the windows wider to let the breeze in. It is a simple place where we spend our days trying to get the lessons finished before the final bell at four. Living and working in Kanchipuram means we see the same faces every day, and that feels right for a school like ours.
