Montfort Matriculation Higher Secondary School sits over at No 1/35 on North Parade Road. It is right in the St Thomas Mount area of Chennai, which most people know is a pretty active part of the city. We have been running things here for quite a while now, and the building has become a familiar sight for anyone living around 600016. The day usually begins with a lot of noise as students gather in the courtyard before the heat gets too bad. We have a lot of stairs and hallways that stay busy from morning until the final bell rings in the afternoon. Our staff members live nearby and they have seen generations of families come through these doors. It is not a corporate setup; it is more like a community where everyone knows everyone else’s business. We spend a lot of time just managing the daily schedule, making sure the registers are marked and the lessons are covered as per the board requirements. The classrooms are simple, filled with the usual desks and chairs that have been moved around a hundred times. Sometimes we have to deal with the traffic noise from the road outside, but you get used to it after a few days. We just keep our heads down and do the work of teaching. It is about getting the students ready for what comes next without making a big fuss about things that don't matter much to the day-to-day work.
