Our place is Megha Moorti Art, and we are over at Plot No. 383 in Surya Nagar. We are quite close to the Gopalpura Bypass Road, right near that Ridhi Sidhi crossing. It’s a busy part of the city with a lot of construction always going on around us. Our plot is basically a big open space where we do all our carving and polishing. It’s always noisy here, between the traffic on the bypass and the sound of our own grinders. We work mostly with stone, making different types of moorties. It’s a dirty job, and there is always a layer of gray sludge on the floor from the water we use while cutting. We don't have a proper office or anything, just a small corner where we keep our coats and a water jug. The sun beats down on the yard all day, so we have some tarps put up to give us a bit of shade while we work. People often pull over because they see us working from the road. We aren't really looking to be famous or anything; we just like to make things out of stone. Sometimes a piece takes weeks to finish, and you just have to be patient with it. It’s hard on the hands and the lungs, but it’s the work we know. We just take it day by day and hope the stone doesn't have any hidden cracks.
