If you walk down Khazane Walon Ka Rasta and get to Darjiyon Ka Chauraha, you will find us at number 2653. Our family business, Kalicharan Omprakash Vajpayee Moorti Wala, has been in this spot for quite a while. The street is always packed with people, and there is a lot of noise from the nearby shops. Our workspace is usually covered in a thin layer of white stone dust. You’ll see us sitting on the floor with our chisels and hammers, working on the moortis. It takes a lot of time to get the faces of the idols just right, and your hands get pretty tired by the end of the day. We don't have a big fancy showroom; the statues just sit along the walls as they are being finished. Sometimes people stop and watch us work from the street because it’s interesting to see the stone change shape. It’s a lot of physical labor, and my lungs feel the dust sometimes, but it’s what we do. We don't do any big advertising or have a website. People just know we are here at the crossroads. We talk to the neighbors, drink a lot of tea, and keep carving. Every idol is a bit different because they are made by hand, not by some machine. It’s just how things have always been done in this part of the city, and we don't plan on changing that soon.
