Bombay Gems

You will find Bombay Gems right in the middle of the bustle at Shop No. 154 along Gopal Ji Ka Rasta. Johari Bazar is a legendary place, but it can be a real headache to navigate if you aren't used to the crowds and the narrow lanes. Our shop is small, but we have managed to fit a lot into it over the years. We spend most of our time sitting behind the glass counters, looking at various stones and chatting with anyone who wanders in. It's not a corporate environment at all. We have tea spills on the back counter and the display lights sometimes need a good smack to stay on. Dealing with gems is a slow business. You have to be patient and have a decent eye for detail. We don't have a mission statement or any of that talk; we just show people what we have in stock and tell them what we know about the pieces. Some days we don't sell a single thing and just spend the afternoon cleaning the glass or talking to the neighbors. Other days, it’s a constant stream of people asking for prices. The street outside is always noisy with scooters and tourists, but inside, we just try to keep things steady. It’s a practical life, and we’ve been here long enough that we can't imagine being anywhere else.
