Jaimini Moorti Kalakar

You can find us at Shop No. 2157 on Khazanewalon Ka Rasta, which is right in the heart of Chandpole Bazar. This part of the city is always crowded and the lanes are quite narrow, but it has a lot of history. We are moorti kalakars, which basically means we spend our days carving figures out of stone. It is a craft that has been in our family for generations. The shop is not very big, and it is usually filled with the sound of metal hitting stone. We do not have a fancy office or a website with lots of pictures. Most of our work comes from people walking through the bazaar and stopping in to see what we are chipping away at. The light inside the shop can be a bit dim, so we often sit near the entrance to do the fine work on the faces of the statues. Marble is a tough material and you have to be careful not to make a mistake. It takes a lot of patience to get the expressions right. We do not hurry the process because good stone work cannot be rushed. Sometimes the dust gets everywhere and it is hard to keep the place clean, but that is just how it is. We are just local craftsmen doing what we know how to do best in this old market.
