Universal Gems

Our place is out on the Delhi Bypass Road, specifically at number 4 in Van Vihar Vistar. Being near the bypass means it’s easy for transport, though the road noise can be a bit much during the day. We work with gems, which is a lot more tedious than people think. It’s not all shiny things; there is a lot of sorting, grading, and looking through magnifying glasses involved. The lighting in the office has to be just right, or you can’t see the true color of the stones. We have a small crew here. Some of us have been looking at stones for twenty years, so we’ve seen just about everything. It’s a quiet sort of job, very detailed. We keep the doors locked most of the time for security reasons, which is just common sense in this business. It’s not a fancy boutique where you walk in and see glass cases everywhere. It’s more of a workspace where we prepare things for the market. We spend a lot of time on the phone with traders and checking the latest prices. Sometimes we get a batch in that takes us all week just to sort through. It’s steady work. We like being out here away from the very center of the city, even if the commute is a bit long for some of us. It’s a good spot for us because we need the space and the focus.
