We’re located in Mattor Kalady, which is a place known for its rice. Kalady Rice Millers Consortium is basically a group of us who came together to handle the milling and distribution of rice from this region. It’s a big operation compared to some of the smaller shops around here, but it still feels like a local effort. The mills are noisy and there’s always a fine dust of rice husk in the air. You get used to it after a day or two. We spend our time watching the machines and making sure the grain is being processed correctly. It’s a lot of work during the harvest season. We have people coming in and out all day with trucks full of paddy. Then we have to dry it, mill it, and bag it up. It’s a long process and there are no shortcuts if you want it to come out right. The office is just a side room where we keep the records and drink way too much coffee. We’ve all grown up around here, so rice is just part of our lives. It’s not a glamorous job. It’s loud, dusty, and involves a lot of manual labor, but it’s what we know. We don’t spend much time on fancy talk. We just focus on the machines and the bags and getting the trucks out on time so the rice gets to the markets. It’s hard work, but we like it.
