Amrreeta Swaarup

Amrreeta Swaarup operates from the lower ground floor at 25 Bengali Market on Babar Road. If you know Bengali Market, you know it’s famous for the food and the busy atmosphere. Being on the lower ground floor means we’re tucked away from the main heat and the direct sun, which is actually quite nice in the summer. The space is filled with clothes and fabrics and bits of thread. It’s a working studio, not a showroom. We have some old mirrors and a few racks for hanging things up. Amrreeta is usually here herself, working on something new or talking to a client. It’s not a corporate environment at all. We have a small kettle for making coffee and the walls are covered in sketches and notes. Sometimes it feels a bit cramped when we have a lot of materials delivered, but we make it work. The light isn't the best because we are partially underground, but we have plenty of lamps. People find us because they know the market area well. We don't do big advertisements. We just focus on the garments and making sure the fit is right. It’s a busy little spot and there is always something being sewn or cut. We like being in the heart of the market because everything we need is just a short walk away.
