Sabujima Farmers Producer Company Limited is a small outfit run by Anima Das in Bijepur. The name Sabujima is about keeping things green, and that is what we try to do with the farming around here. Anima’s place serves as the main hub where we all gather. Bijepur is a place where everyone knows what everyone else is growing, so there are no secrets. We started this because we wanted to see if we could get better prices for our produce if we all went in together. It’s mostly women and local families working on this. We don't have a big warehouse or anything, just a few rooms where we can store some supplies and meet to talk. The conversations are usually about the rain, the cost of labor, and whose tractor is currently working. It’s very down-to-earth. We don't use any of those big business words because they don't really mean much when you are standing in a field. We just want to make sure the work we put in during the day turns into something useful for our families. It’s a bit of a struggle sometimes, especially when the market is down, but we stick together. Anima keeps the books and makes sure we are all staying on track. It is a simple, honest way to run things. We aren't looking for fame, just a way to keep the farms going.
