Up here in Mahmudabad, Sitapur, we have the Imaliya Agro Farmer Producer Company Limited. Sandeep Kumar’s place in Govindpur Sitapur is where we keep our records and meet. Sitapur is known for its farming, and we are right in the middle of it. We are a bunch of local farmers who thought it was time to organize. It’s hard to get a good price for crops when you go alone to the mandi. So, we pooled our resources. The area is quite green during the monsoon, but the heat in May can be really something. We grow a lot of sugarcane around here, along with the usual wheat and mustard. Our days start early, before the sun gets too high. We spend a lot of time talking about the cost of diesel and the price of seeds. It’s not always a smooth operation. Sometimes the tractor breaks down right when we need it most. But being a group means someone is usually around to help. We don’t have a big corporate style. We just talk like we always have, over some tea. The goal is just to make the farming life a bit more stable for everyone involved. We handle the paperwork ourselves, which can be confusing, but we’re figuring it out as we go. It’s just us, the land, and our crops. We are just simple people trying to make a living from our fields.
