Jay Ambe Pan House

The shop is located in the Bmc Chamber, right across from Ravi Complex in Asoj. It is a small corner, number 11, but it fits everything we need. Most of the day is spent folding leaves and cutting supari. Our hands are usually stained from the lime and the juices. We have rows of small jars with all kinds of fillings and sweets to put inside the pan. It is a place where people stop for five minutes to talk about the weather or the news. The counter is narrow and we have to be careful not to knock things over when it gets crowded. Being opposite the complex means we see a lot of office workers and people running errands. We stay open until the street lights have been on for a long time. It gets dark in the corner, so we have a couple of bright bulbs hanging from the ceiling. We don't have a big sign or anything flashy. People just know we are here. Sometimes we sell cigarettes or matchboxes too, whatever people ask for. The shelves are a bit dusty because the road outside is always busy with cars kicking up dirt. We just keep our head down and keep making the pan. It is a simple business that doesn't need much more than a bit of space and some fresh leaves. We just show up and do the work every day.
