Afsar India

Afsar India is based at New No. 4 in the Good Fabric Compound. Being in Serankadu South off Dharapuram Road means we are right in the middle of a lot of textile action. The compound is always full of noise from other units, mostly machines humming or trucks idling. Our space is functional, nothing more. We have high ceilings and lots of stacks of material. The walls have a few scuffs from moving heavy crates around. We spend most of the day sorting through batches of fabric. Some of it is heavy, some light. You get a feel for the quality just by touching it after a while. We don’t really have a front office, just a desk tucked in the corner with a lot of paperwork. It gets hot in the afternoons, so we keep the big doors open to catch whatever breeze comes through. It’s a bit of a maze in here when we have a lot of stock. We use a lot of chalk for marking things. Sometimes we make mistakes on the tallies and have to count everything all over again. The Good Fabric Compound has a gate that squeaks every time a truck goes through. We have a small radio that only picks up one or two stations clearly, so we listen to the same songs a lot. It’s a lot of physical labor, dragging the heavy bales across the concrete floor. We just want to get the fabric loaded on time.
