Varney Fabrics

Our shop is at 126-127 on the ground floor of the Universal Textile Market. We are right on Ring Road, across from the Millennium Textile Market. It's a very busy intersection. There are always trucks and rickshaws moving fabrics around outside. We deal mostly in raw fabrics. We have these big rolls of cloth stacked everywhere. It’s a lot of heavy lifting. Sometimes my back hurts by the end of the day, but that’s just part of the job. We have a small cutting table in the back where we measure out what people need. The floor is usually covered in little bits of thread and scraps. We sweep it up every night before we close. It’s a noisy place with all the market sounds coming in from the hallway. We don't have air conditioning, just a couple of big fans that move the air around. My father started this and now I help run it. We don't do any big advertising. People just know we are here in the Universal market. We get our tea from the same guy every morning. It’s a predictable routine. We just focus on the fabric and making sure the rolls are labeled correctly. It’s simple work but it keeps the family going. We’ve seen many businesses come and go on this road, but we stay put. We keep our doors open for whoever needs a few meters of cloth. We aren't in any rush to change things.
