Suresh Foods is at number 65 on the corner of Ring Road and Gulmohar Road. It’s a busy junction. We open up early, usually before the sun is fully up, to get the fresh stock in. It’s a lot of crates of vegetables and bags of grains. The floor is made of old tiles that are a bit cracked in the corners. We don't have a lot of space, so we stack things high. You have to be careful when you're reaching for something on the top shelf. We’ve got a small fridge for the dairy stuff that hums quite loudly. Most of the people who come in are regulars who live in the apartments nearby. We know what they want before they even ask. It’s a lot of weighing things out on the scale and bagging them up. Sometimes the bags rip if we put too much in. The air smells like onions and dried spices. We don't have any big posters or neon lights. It’s just a plain shop with a wooden counter. My brother helps me with the accounts in the evenings. The traffic on Ring Road never seems to stop, even late at night. We stay open until the last of the commuters have gone home. It’s tiring but it’s what we do. We don't plan on moving anywhere else. Gulmohar Road is home for us and the neighbors are all very friendly people around this part of town.
