Shree Swastik Ply & Hardware

Surat traffic is something else, especially near the Varachha Fly Over Bridge. We are right at the end of it on Varaccha Road. The shop is full of wood smells and metal bits. Shree Swastik Ply & Hardware is where I spend about twelve hours a day. My hands are always a bit dusty from the plywood sheets. We load the trucks right out front and sometimes the traffic police yell at us for blocking the way. It is a busy spot. People come in looking for specific hinges or a certain thickness of ply. I try to find what they need in the back piles. It’s crowded in here. I keep a small desk in the corner but it’s mostly covered in bills and samples. Kapodra is a loud area. You can hear the bikes and trucks all day long. Sometimes we drink a lot of water because of the Surat humidity. My brother takes care of the accounts when he’s around. We don't have a computer system or anything like that. Just some notebooks and a calculator. It works for us. If someone wants a specific brand, we tell them if we have it or not. No point in lying about it. Just a regular hardware life near the bridge. We've been here for a good while and most of the carpenters in the area know us by name now. It’s just how things are on Varachha Road.
