Our place is at 212 Meera Road, right in the heart of Surat. Sakhi Textiles is mostly just a big room filled with rolls of cloth and heavy machinery for measuring. The traffic on Meera Road can be a nightmare in the afternoons, so we usually try to get our big shipments out early in the morning. The walls are painted a plain white but they are covered in scuff marks from all the boxes we move around. We have a small desk near the front where we keep the phone and the bills. It is often very hot inside, so we keep the doors open as much as we can. You can hear the motorbikes zooming past all day. We deal with a lot of different people, from truck drivers to other local traders. It is the kind of job where your hands stay dusty from handling the fabric. We don't have any fancy signs or bright lights. Most people find us because they know the address or someone told them where we are. We have a small routine where we clean the floor every morning before the sun gets too high. It is hard work and the days are long, but it is what we know. Surat is a city that never really stops moving, and we are just a small part of that whole textile world. We hope to stay here for many more years to come.
