We’re based out of unit 501 in the Surat Textile Market area over by Charkop. It’s a busy spot, especially in the mornings when the trucks are unloading all the fabric rolls. Our space is mostly taken up by stacks of cloth in every color you can think of. There’s a lot of dust from the fibers, so we keep the fans going pretty much all the time. We spend our days checking the quality of the materials and getting things ready to ship out to different places. It’s a lot of weighing bundles and writing out tags by hand. My hands are usually stained with some kind of dye or ink by the time I head home. We aren't a big corporation, just a small team of us working in this unit. The hallways in the market are narrow and people are always rushing past with bundles on their shoulders. You have to watch your step. Sometimes we share a meal in the back room when things quiet down for a half hour. We don’t have any fancy marketing people. We just deal directly with the vendors and the transport guys. It can get stressful when a shipment is late, but we manage to get through it. It’s just how the textile business is here. We’ve been in this building for years and we know all the other shop owners on this floor.
