Hastkala

Hastkala is tucked away at 254 Purohit Bhawan in the Hussainpura area of Surat. It is an old part of the city and the building has been there for a long time. When you walk inside, you will see piles of fabric and different items that we have collected over time. We deal with a lot of traditional work and the shelves are crowded with things that have a lot of color and detail. It can be a bit overwhelming if you are not used to seeing so many patterns in one place. The light in Purohit Bhawan isn't always the brightest, so we have to move closer to the door sometimes to see the true shade of a thread or a piece of cloth. People come to us when they are looking for something specific for a celebration or just to add something nice to their home. We spend a lot of our day folding things back up after showing them to customers who like to touch the material before they decide. Hussainpura is a busy neighborhood with a lot of history, and you can hear the noise of the street outside all through the afternoon. We don't really have a big sign or anything flashy, people usually find us because they live nearby or someone told them where we were. It is a quiet kind of business most days, just us and the stock and the people coming in to browse the latest arrivals.
