Our location is quite a way out, about 27 kilometers down the Surat-Hazira Road. It’s a long drive from the main city, and you see a lot of industry and big trucks along the way. Out here, the landscape is dominated by big structures and pipes. It’s a hot and windy place most of the time. We spend our shifts monitoring the systems and making sure everything is running like it should. There are a lot of stairs to climb and long walkways between different parts of the facility. It’s a 24-hour operation, so there is always someone on site, whether it's the middle of the day or three in the morning. The sound of the turbines or the hum of the equipment is just something you get used to after a few days. We wear our safety gear all day, which can get uncomfortable in the humidity of Surat. Lunch is usually a quick affair in the canteen before heading back to the controls or the maintenance floor. It’s a big site, so we do a lot of walking. Dealing with power isn't a simple task, but we just focus on our specific roles. The road outside is always busy with workers coming and going from the various plants in Hazira. It’s a very different world out here compared to the markets in the city center. We keep the machines humming along day and night without much break, and that is basically how our weeks go by at this spot near the coast.
