Birsa Munda Food Plaza

Operating a place like Birsa Munda Food Plaza inside the Ranchi Railway Station is a whole different kind of life. We are right there on Platform Number 1, so we see thousands of people every single day. Some people are coming home to Ranchi and some are just passing through on the long-distance trains. It is always noisy here with the announcements and the whistles, but we got used to it long ago. We don’t really have a slow time because there is always a train arriving or leaving. My staff and I work in shifts because the station never really sleeps. We keep the tea brewing and the food ready for people who only have five minutes before their coach pulls out. It is a small space behind the counter, so we have to stay organized or we would bump into each other. The floor gets dirty fast with all the boots and bags, so we are always mopping. We aren't trying to be a five-star hotel. We just provide a meal to someone who has been traveling for twelve hours and is tired. Dealing with the railway authorities and the constant rush is tiring, but it's what we do. Ranchi is our home, and being the first or last thing people see at the station feels okay. We don't use fancy napkins or anything like that. It’s just a plate and a spoon and quick service for the passengers.
