Thackersey Foundation

If you walk down M.S. Marg in the Fort area of Mumbai, you will see Sir Vithaldas Chambers. That’s where we are, up in room five-fourteen. The building has that old Mumbai feel to it, with thick walls and high ceilings. It’s a busy part of the city, so there is always a lot of shouting and horns honking from the street below. Thackersey Foundation has been here for a good amount of time. The office itself is full of old wooden furniture that probably weighs a ton. We don't have any fancy signs outside. Just a small plate on the door. It gets quite humid, so the ceiling fans are almost always spinning at top speed. We keep a lot of records in big steel cupboards that take up most of one wall. Working in Fort means everything is close by, but it also means it’s always crowded. We usually grab lunch from one of the stalls nearby or bring a tiffin from home. The lift in the building is one of those old ones with the grill door you have to pull shut yourself. It’s a bit cranky sometimes. We spend our days mostly on the phone or writing things out. It’s a very traditional way of working, I suppose. No open-plan desks or bean bags here. Just people sitting at desks doing what needs to be done. The evening light looks nice hitting the old stone buildings around us before we pack up for the night.
