Paintings Portraits is based at 2 Mohammadi House on Hill Road in Bandra West. If you know Hill Road, you know it’s one of the busiest places in Mumbai with all the shoppers and stalls. Our studio is tucked inside this old building, and it’s a bit of a relief to step inside and away from the noise of the street. It’s a small space, mostly filled with canvases, easels, and jars of brushes. I spend most of my daylight hours here because the light comes in quite well through the window. There is always a faint smell of oil paint and turpentine, which I’ve grown to love over the years. I do a lot of portrait work, so there are often sketches of faces pinned to the walls. It is a very personal kind of business. People come in with photos or ideas, and I try to turn them into something on canvas. It’s not a fast process, and the studio is often cluttered with drying paintings. I don't have any fancy marketing or a big sign outside. Most people find me because they were walking by or heard about the place from someone else. Bandra has a lot of artists, and I’m just one of them working in a small room on Hill Road. It’s a quiet life of painting and waiting for the paint to dry.
