We run M U Zari Arts out of Room No 6 in the Italian Building over in Mahalaxmi. It is an old building that has been around for a long time. Our room is not very big, but it has enough space for our work. We focus on zari work, which involves a lot of detailed embroidery with metallic threads. It is the kind of work that takes a lot of time and steady hands. The room is usually filled with the sound of needles and sometimes a small radio playing in the background. We don't have any fancy signs or a big storefront. If you are looking for us, you have to find the Italian Building first and then head to the sixth room. Mahalaxmi is a busy area, but our little corner is relatively quiet. We aren't a big factory; it's just a few of us who have learned this craft over the years. We don't use any modern marketing tricks to get customers. Most people find us through word of mouth or because they have seen our work elsewhere. The lighting in the room is okay, but we often use extra lamps to see the fine details of the threads. It is honest, hard work that doesn't change much from day to day. We like the tradition of it and being in such an old part of the city.
