Khaana Chahiye Foundation

Mumbai is a busy place, especially around Vile Parle West. We're based in Flat 301, Shivam - A, inside the BBCI Railway Employees Society in Irla. The name Khaana Chahiye basically says it all. We noticed so many people going hungry while others had so much extra. It didn't sit right with us. This whole thing started in a kitchen, really. Now we use this flat as our main base. It’s usually full of boxes and people coming in and out. The Irla area is always crowded, and the traffic on the way to Mumbai City is something else. We spend a lot of time on the phone and coordinating with people who have food to give. It’s not a corporate office. It’s a home turned into a workspace. We have stacks of papers and schedules pinned to the walls. Sometimes it gets a bit chaotic, especially during the monsoon when moving around Mumbai is a nightmare. We aren't professionals in suits. We are just a group of people who think that nobody in our city should sleep on an empty stomach. It takes a lot of coordination to get food from one place to another before it goes bad. We deal with local vendors and volunteers who give their time. It’s tiring work, but it’s what we do. If you come by Shivam - A, you'll probably see us carrying crates or checking lists. We're just trying to do our bit for the neighborhood. It keeps us on our toes.
