Creative Women'S Empowerment Foundation

We operate out of the Creative Handicrafts building on D.P. Road in the Midc area of Andheri East. It’s right in the middle of the industrial hub of Mumbai. You can hear the sounds of sewing machines and people talking all day long. Creative Women'S Empowerment Foundation isn't a corporate office with cubicles. It’s more of a workshop feel. There are piles of fabric everywhere and the smell of fresh tea in the mornings. We spend a lot of time sitting together and working on different projects. It’s not always organized perfectly. Sometimes we lose a pair of scissors or run out of a specific color of thread. But the women here are hardworking and they know what they’re doing. We don't use big words to describe what we do. We just make things and help each other out. Living in Mumbai City means space is tight, so we use every inch of the room we have. The floor is often covered in scraps of cloth. We have some old wooden tables that have seen better days, but they’re sturdy enough for our needs. People come in and out, sharing stories while they work. It’s a noisy, busy, and slightly chaotic place, but it feels like home to us. We just keep our heads down and focus on the task in front of us, making sure everyone has what they need to get through the afternoon.
