Chetana Art is tucked away in Tanaji Nagar, over in Malad East. It’s not a big gallery with white walls and soft lighting. Honestly, it’s more of a workshop where things are a bit messy. I’ve lived in Malad for a long time, so setting up the shop here felt like the right thing to do. We have frames leaning against the walls and stacks of paper everywhere you look. Sometimes it’s hard to find a clear spot on the counter to talk to someone. We do a lot of framing and small art projects for the people living in the neighborhood. It’s just me and one other person most days. We don’t have a big corporate plan. We just like making things look good for our customers. The street outside can get pretty cramped with cars and people walking by, but that’s just Malad for you. It’s a lively place to be. I often have paint on my hands when I come to greet a customer. It’s just part of the job. We aren't trying to be the biggest art shop in Mumbai. We just want to do good work for the folks who live nearby. If you’re looking for us, just ask someone in Tanaji Nagar; they usually know where we are. The sign is a bit faded from the sun, but we haven't gotten around to repainting it yet. We're too busy with the work inside and making sure frames are straight.
