Archana Art Classes started right here in Dahisar East at A 302. It is basically a home that turned into a studio over the years. You can tell as soon as you walk in because there are paint splashes on the floor tiles that we never quite managed to scrub off. It smells like linseed oil and pencils most of the time. We aren't a big school with a hundred teachers. It’s a more personal thing where people come to learn how to draw or paint without feeling like they are back in a strict classroom. The light in this apartment is actually pretty good in the afternoons, which helps when you’re trying to get a color just right. Dahisar is a busy part of Mumbai, but once you get up to the third floor, it’s a bit quieter. We have stacks of canvases leaning against the walls and boxes of charcoal everywhere. People bring their kids here, or sometimes adults come after work to just relax and create something. We don't have a fancy syllabus or glossy brochures. We just show people how to hold a brush and let them find their own way. It’s messy and informal, but that’s how art should be. We’ve been doing this for a long time and the neighborhood knows us well. We just keep the doors open for whoever wants to pick up a pencil.
