Amma Art Gallery

Being located at Andheri West 19 means we’re right in the thick of everything. The street outside is always noisy with rickshaws and people shouting, but once you step inside Amma Art Gallery, things finally calm down a bit. It’s a small space, and we’ve filled every available inch of the walls with something interesting. We aren't one of those galleries where you feel like you have to whisper and stay behind a velvet rope. It’s much more casual than that. We spend our days talking to people who drop in, some of whom are just looking to kill time while waiting for a bus or a friend. We do a lot of the heavy lifting ourselves, moving frames around and hanging new pieces whenever something sells. It’s surprisingly physical work, and my shoulders are usually sore by Friday. We don't have any polished sales pitches or corporate brochures to hand out. If you like a piece, you like it, and we’re happy to tell you who made it. The lighting in the back is a bit dim, so we’re always fiddling with the lamps to get the shadows right. It’s a bit of a cluttered shop, but that’s just how we like it. We’ve been here long enough that the regulars know they can just come in and chat without any pressure to buy anything. It’s just a local spot for people who appreciate seeing something different. We just keep the doors open and see who comes in.
