My brother and I have been working out of this space in GIDC 501 4 B for a few years. It is tucked away in Andheri West, which is always crowded and noisy. We started Alam Brothers Arts because we both liked making things with our hands and didn't want to work for a big company. The unit isn't very large, so we have to move stuff around whenever a new project comes in. We mostly spend our time fixing things or creating pieces that people ask for specifically. Sometimes it gets a bit dusty in here with all the materials we use. We don't have a big staff, just the two of us and a helper who comes in three days a week. Most of our tools are quite old but they still work fine for what we need to do. People usually call us before they come over because the entrance to the building can be hard to spot if you aren't looking for it. We usually have tea in the afternoon and talk about what needs to be finished by the weekend. It’s a quiet life compared to the rest of the city, even if the machines make a lot of noise. We just keep our heads down and get the work done. It's not glamorous, but it pays the bills and keeps us busy. We like being our own bosses even when the money is tight and the deadlines are short.
