Aakar Art Gallery is located in the Ghantakarn Market, at 49/A in Breach Candy. It’s an interesting spot because the market is usually full of people looking for textiles or household items, and then there we are with the art. The space itself at 49/A isn't huge, so we have to be careful with how we hang everything. Moving heavy frames around is a workout, and I’ve definitely bumped my head on the low ceiling in the back more than once. We don't have fancy lighting systems like the big galleries in the city. We mostly rely on the overhead lights and whatever sun comes through the front window. Some days are very quiet, and I just sit here and read or tidy up the files. Other days, a bunch of people come in at once and it feels quite crowded. The floor is old wood that creaks whenever someone walks over the middle section. We handle everything ourselves, from talking to the artists to packing up the pieces for delivery. It’s a lot of bubble wrap and tape. Breach Candy is a nice area, but being inside the market gives us a bit of a different feel. It’s not a polished museum; it’s just a working gallery where things are a little messy behind the desk. Sometimes we run out of catalogs and have to print them ourselves on the old machine we have in the corner.
