You can find us right by the railway crossing on the Bye Pass Road. It’s a bit of a noisy spot with the trains going past and the traffic on the bypass, but it’s where we are. We set up here because it was easy for transport. We deal in marbles of all kinds. The yard is usually a bit of a mess with scraps and dust, but that’s how it goes in this trade. I started this with a friend because we knew how to handle stone. We don't have a showroom with air conditioning or anything like that. People just walk in, look at the stacks, and tell us what they need. We spend a lot of time on our feet, walking back and forth between the blocks. My shoes are always white from the stone dust. We have a few guys who help with the heavy lifting and the cutting. Some days the machines break down and we spend the afternoon fixing them ourselves. It’s not a glamorous life, but it pays the bills. We know the local builders and they know where to find us. We usually have the radio playing in the office to drown out the train noise. It’s a simple setup, nothing more, nothing less. We just keep working until the sun goes down and then we lock up the gate. It’s been our daily routine for a long time and we are used to the rumble of the trains passing.
