Sandeepak Marble

Down here on Borawar Road, Sandeepak Marble is a pretty straightforward place. We aren't in the big industrial zones, so it’s a little different, but the work is exactly the same. The road out front is usually busy with tractors and trucks hauling blocks from the quarries nearby. I spend a lot of my time just standing near the road watching the traffic and waiting for customers to pull in. Our yard is filled with rows of marble that we’ve cut and polished right here. You can hear the water running over the blades most of the day because we try to keep the stones cool while we work on them. It’s a lot of manual labor, lifting and tilting slabs so the light hits them right. I’ve been working with stone since I was a teenager, and my hands show it. We don't have a website or anything like that; we just rely on people driving by or friends telling friends about us. When someone comes in, I usually offer them some water and we walk around the piles of stone until they see something they like. It’s not a fast process. Sometimes we sit for an hour just talking about the weather or the local news before we even get to the marble. That’s just how things go on Borawar Road. It’s a steady pace and we like it that way. We don't try to rush people through the yard.
