Our shop is at Aerodrome Circle 5, which is a place where there is always a lot of vehicle movement. Dealing with batteries is heavy work and our hands are usually stained with grease or lead. We handle all sorts of batteries for cars, bikes, and even those big ones used for home inverters. Often, someone pulls up because their car won't start, and we have to lug a heavy battery out to their vehicle to test it. We have a charging station in the back where rows of batteries sit connected to wires, humming quietly. The air inside smells a bit like acid and metal, which you get used to after a while. It is a practical business. We don't spend money on fancy decorations because the floor gets dirty from the battery water and the heavy lifting anyway. We just have a desk, some old ledgers, and stacks of new and old batteries everywhere. If a battery can be saved by refilling the water or a slow charge, we tell the customer. If it's dead, it's dead and they need a replacement. We've been at this spot for a long time and the locals know where to find us when their lights go out or their scooter gives up. It is honest work that keeps us busy from morning till night, often working under a single bright bulb when it gets dark. It's heavy and messy but someone has to do it.
