Shakti Battery Corporation is tucked away in New Motor Market 22. If you walk into this part of the market, you’ll immediately notice the smell of lead and battery acid. It’s a very specific kind of smell that you get used to after a week or so. Our shop is mostly filled with heavy black boxes stacked on top of each other. Moving them around is a real workout, and we definitely don’t need to go to a gym after a day here. We have a long wooden bench where we keep batteries on charge, and there’s always that low humming sound coming from the equipment. The floor is concrete and has a few cracks in it from dropping things over the years. We spend a lot of time checking water levels and testing terminals with our handheld meters. It’s dirty work and our clothes usually end up with small holes in them from the acid spills. The neighbors in the market are all pretty much doing the same kind of stuff, so we help each other out when someone needs a hand moving something particularly heavy. We sit out front on plastic chairs when things are slow, watching the delivery trucks pull in and out of the narrow lanes. It’s a simple life, focused on keeping things powered up. By the time the sun goes down, we’re usually pretty tired, but the work is steady and keeps us going.
