We are located at 143 Hill Cart Road, in a building called Malati Bhawan. If you know the area, Hill Cart Road is the main artery that takes you up towards the mountains. You can hear the horns of the shared jeeps all day long as they head up to Darjeeling or Kalimpong. Help Tourism is right in the middle of that bustle. Our office is full of old posters and piles of maps that have been folded too many times. We spend our days talking to people about where they want to go and trying to find a driver who knows the back roads. It’s not a shiny travel agency like the ones you see in malls. It’s a bit messy, and there’s usually a pot of tea going in the back. We get all sorts of folks coming through the door, some looking for a quiet trek and others just lost and needing directions. The rain here can be really something, just pouring down on the tin roofs until you can’t hear yourself think. We just keep the files organized and try to make sure the bookings are solid. It’s a lot of work on the phone, checking if the mountain roads are open or if the homestays have enough blankets. We’ve been at Malati Bhawan for a while now, and the wooden floors still creak when you walk to the window to see the clouds.
