Our yard is over at D-504/1 on Chetla Road in Alipore. If you come by, you’ll see the big slabs of stone leaning against the walls. It’s a dusty place, honestly. There is no way to keep a marble and granite business clean when you’re cutting and moving heavy stone all day long. We have the big saws running and water spraying to keep the heat down, so it stays pretty damp and messy underfoot. We’ve been at this Alipore location for a while. The guys working here have been with us through plenty of hot summers and rainy seasons. We don’t really have a fancy showroom like the places you see in magazines. It’s more of a practical working space where we keep the inventory. People usually come in with measurements scribbled on scraps of paper, and we help them find a piece that looks okay for their kitchen or floors. Sometimes the slabs have little cracks or patterns that people don’t like, so we spend a lot of time shifting heavy stuff around to show them something else. It’s hard work on the legs and arms. We stay busy with the local builders and folks doing up their houses. We just try to keep the stone moving and the machines running without breaking down. It’s not a glamorous life, but it’s what we know how to do best here on Chetla Road. We are just regular people working with heavy stone.
