Our place is at 34-A, Metcalfe Street. Ashoke Enamel & Glass Works Pvt. Ltd. has been on this street for many years. It’s an old building with high ceilings and big windows that let in the morning light. Working with glass and enamel means there’s always a bit of dust in the air and the sound of things clinking together. We have a lot of specialized equipment, some of it is quite old but it still does the job better than the new stuff. Metcalfe Street is a busy part of the city, and we are right in the middle of it. You can hear the trams and the cars outside all day long. Inside, it’s a different world where we focus on the firing and the cooling of the pieces. The workers here have a lot of patience because you can’t rush glass. It’s a slow process sometimes. We have a small office tucked in the corner where the files are kept in big metal cabinets. It’s not a very modern setup, but it works for us. We drink a lot of water because it gets hot near the kilns. Most of the people working here have been part of the family for a long time. We don't spend much time on the phone or the computer. Most of our day is spent at the benches, looking at the work right in front of us.
