M M Oriental High School has its place in Panayapally, which is part of the Mattancherry area in Ernakulam. If you know Mattancherry, you know it’s a place with a lot of history and very narrow streets. Our school is right there in the mix of it all. The building itself has been around for quite some time, so it has that old Ernakulam feel to it. We get kids from all kinds of backgrounds because this neighborhood is like a big melting pot. It’s not a quiet school by any means; there is always the sound of the city coming in through the windows. The teachers here have to be patient because high schoolers can be a handful sometimes. We have our classrooms and a small area for activities, but we mostly focus on the books and getting through the syllabus. It’s an oriental school, so we have some specific subjects that reflect that, which makes us a bit different from the others nearby. We don't have fancy tech in every corner, just the basics that have worked for years. People around Panayapally know us well, and many of the parents actually studied here themselves back in the day. It’s a bit crowded and old-fashioned, but it’s home for us and the students who spend their days here. We just try to keep the tradition going as best as we can without making too much of a fuss about it.
