Yogkishan Farmer Producer Company Limited is based at Ramesh Patel’s house in Paras Nath, Basahiya Buzurg. It’s a quiet place most of the time, except when it’s time to move the harvest. We don’t have a formal lobby or anything like that. People just walk in through the main door and find us in the front room where we’ve set up a couple of tables. There’s usually a dog sleeping somewhere nearby and the smell of the fields is always in the air. We started this because Ramesh and a few others wanted to make sure the farmers in Basahiya Buzurg weren’t getting the short end of the stick. We spend a lot of time looking at the sky and worrying about the rain, just like everyone else around here. The paperwork can be a real headache, and none of us are particularly fond of sitting behind a desk for too long, but it’s part of the job. We keep our records in big handwritten books and try to stay on top of things as best we can. Sometimes we get into long arguments about the best way to do things, but we always end up shaking hands over a cup of tea. It’s a local operation, run by people who actually live here and know the soil. We don’t use fancy language or try to sound like we’re from the big city. We’re just farmers working for farmers.
