Jokaichuk Red Rice Producer Company Limited is based at Kesharam Dutta’s place in the village of Dikhowmukh. If you know the area near Bharalura Tiniali, you know where we are. We focus on red rice because that is what grows best in our soil. It’s a special kind of rice, but it takes a lot of work to get it right. Most of us learned how to farm it from our parents and grandparents. We decided to form this company so we could keep the tradition going while also trying to find better ways to sell it. We aren't some big corporation with suits and ties. We are usually in our work clothes, covered in mud from the paddies. The house serves as our meeting point where we weigh the grain and talk about the next season. The river is close by, which is good for the rice but sometimes scary when the water rises. We worry about the weather a lot. That’s just part of being a farmer in Dikhowmukh. We don't have a bunch of machines; it’s mostly manual labor. We share what we know and help each other during the planting season. It’s about keeping our village alive and making sure our red rice doesn't disappear. It’s a simple goal, but it takes everything we’ve got to make it happen every year without fail.
