R D International School sits right on Karur Main Road here in Modakurichi. Erode gets pretty hot most days, so the morning starts early before the sun really hits the playground. We have been here for a while now, just doing what schools do. There is a lot of noise when the buses pull in and the kids start jumping out with their heavy bags. The building is painted, but you can see where the rain has left marks over the years. We have the usual stuff, desks that have seen better days and blackboards that always need a good wipe. People around here know the spot. It is not some fancy place with glass walls, just a regular school where things happen day by day. Sometimes the bells don’t ring exactly on time because someone forgot, or the gate gets stuck if it rains too much. We try to keep the garden going, but the Erode heat makes it tough. In the afternoons, the smell of lunch boxes fills the halls. It is mostly rice and sambar. You can hear the teachers talking through the open windows while the traffic goes by on the main road. It is a busy place, always something going on, whether it is a sports day or just a regular Tuesday. We just keep the doors open and make sure the benches are lined up for the next morning. It is home for us during the day.
