If you are looking for us, we are out in Maloth Village, near the anganvadi in Konnakkadu. The address is BGP VIII/385 in the Chettikkattu area. It is a bit of a drive to get out here, but that is where the granite business takes you. PAMATHATTU GRANITES PRIVATE LIMITED is pretty much a local operation. We spend most of our time out in the open air or in the small office shed. It is a quiet part of the world until the machines start up. We see a lot of the same faces every day, mostly workers from the village and drivers who know these roads well. The weather affects us a lot; when it rains hard, things slow down at the site. We don’t have a website or anything like that because most people just know where we are or hear about us from their neighbors. Working with stone is dirty work and your clothes always end up covered in grey dust by the afternoon. We take breaks when we can and try to stay out of the midday sun. It is a simple way to make a living, even if it is physically tiring. There is a lot of paperwork to keep track of with the government rules and transport permits. We just sit at the old wooden desk and get through it one page at a time. It’s not a glamorous life, but the granite we move ends up in some very nice houses.
