Our work is based out of the Vithayathil Building in Edappally. If you are familiar with this part of town, you know the traffic has become quite a headache lately. We are Vithayathil Granites Pvt. Ltd. and we deal with heavy stone all day long. The yard is usually packed with big granite slabs leaning against the frames. It is very heavy work and you have to be careful every single time you move a piece so it doesn't chip or crack on the edges. We use a small crane and some trolleys to get things moved around. We have all sorts of colors and patterns of stone, mostly depending on what the trucks bring us from the quarries each month. Edappally has grown so fast that there is construction happening on every corner now. We provide the stone for a lot of those kitchen counters and floors you see in the new flats. It is a messy business with all the water we use for the cutting tools and the dust that comes from polishing the surfaces. We wear heavy boots because the ground stays wet most of the day. It is not a very glamorous job, but it is steady for us. Most of the guys here have been handling stone for years, so they can tell a good piece from a bad one just by looking closely at the grain. It is a lot of physical labor.
