Our office is F-1 in Hari Sadan, which is Building No.20 on Ansari Road. Daryaganj is famous for books, and we are right in the thick of it. Getting up to the office can be a bit of a workout if you’re carrying a heavy bag. The building has that old Delhi feel to it, thick walls and narrow hallways. We spend our time distributing books to different places. It means a lot of checking lists and making sure the counts are right. The desks are usually covered in shipping labels and transit forms. It’s not a quiet job. There’s always someone coming in or leaving with a package. We have a small staff and we all end up doing a bit of everything. One minute you’re on the phone, the next you’re helping move a pallet. We don’t have fancy furniture or a coffee machine that makes lattes. We just have a kettle and some tea bags. The windows look out over the street, and the noise is constant, but you stop noticing it after an hour. We’ve been at Hari Sadan for a long time. It’s a practical place for a practical business. We don’t try to be anything we aren’t. We just move books from one place to another and try to keep our records straight.
