At Plot No. 3242 in Singmari village, you’ll find Daspara Farmers Producer Company Limited. We are set up at Abhijit Roy’s place near Berubari. This whole thing started because several of us farmers in the village were tired of getting the short end of the stick when selling our produce. We figured if we banded together, we might have a better chance of keeping our farms running properly. It’s a group of neighbors, really. We talk about seeds, the price of equipment, and who is buying what this season. It’s not always smooth sailing. There’s a lot of paperwork that comes with being a company, and we’re still getting the hang of that part. But the farming part we know well. We take pride in what we grow here in Singmari. Most of the folks involved have lived here their whole lives. We meet up at the office to plan out the next few months and see how we can help each other out. It’s practical work. No one is trying to get rich quick; we just want a fair shake for the effort we put into the dirt. We use what we have and try to improve things little by little. It feels good to have a name for our group and a place to gather. We’re just local people doing the best we can with our land and making sure the PO-Berubari area stays productive for everyone.
