Velman Wood Carving

You can find our workshop at No. 152 on Nava India Road in Peelamedu. This is where Velman Wood Carving happens. The first thing you usually notice when you walk in is the smell of wood and the thin layer of sawdust on almost everything. We spend our days with chisels and hammers, working on different pieces. It is noisy because of the cutting and sanding, but we like the sound of work being done. We don’t have a fancy showroom with carpets. It is a concrete floor and some sturdy workbenches. Peelamedu is a busy area, and there is always traffic moving on the road outside. Sometimes people stop by just to see what we are making. We don't have a big catalog of items; we mostly just work on what people ask us for. Each piece takes time and there is no way to rush it if you want it to look right. Some days our hands are sore and our backs ache, but seeing a finished carving makes it okay. We aren't a big factory with robots. It’s just us and our tools. We’ve been on Nava India Road for a while and the locals know us. It’s a practical life, making things out of wood and trying to do a decent job every single day. We don't need much more than some good wood and our trusty tools.
