Siraj Gents Hair Stylist & Beautician is down in the basement of the Cisons Complex. We are at Shop Number 32 on Montieth Road in Egmore. It’s right across from the Government Museum, so we get a lot of people who are visiting that area. Being in the basement means it stays a bit cooler than the street level, which is nice during the Chennai summers. You have to walk down the stairs to find us. The shop has a lot of mirrors and bright lights so we can see what we are doing. We do haircuts and also some basic skin stuff for men, like cleaning up the face after a long day in the sun. The chairs are the kind that can pump up and down, though one of them sticks a little bit when you try to lower it. We have a big shelf with different types of hair gels and aftershaves. The floor is tiled and we sweep it every time a customer leaves so it doesn't get messy. We usually have a small radio playing some film songs in the background to keep things from being too quiet. It’s not a fancy place, but it’s comfortable enough for people to sit and relax for a bit. We see all kinds of people, from students to older men who have been living in Egmore for decades. We just do the work.
