P.K.S.Saloon

If you walk down Salai Vinayagar Street in Parrys, you’ll find P.K.S.Saloon at number 63. We are quite close to Mannady, which means there is always a lot of noise and people moving around outside. It is one of those old-style shops where the floor is a bit worn from all the walking, and the chairs have been here for years. We don’t have any air conditioning, so we just keep the front open to get whatever breeze comes through the street. Most of our customers are men who have been coming to us since they were kids. They come in for a quick trim or a shave before heading off to work in the markets nearby. We know most of their names and how they like their hair done without even asking them. The walls have a few old calendars and maybe a picture of a god with some faded flowers. It isn't the quietest place because of the traffic in Chennai, but it feels right for this area. We use simple tools and keep things straightforward. Sometimes we run out of tea and have to send someone to the shop next door. It’s just a regular life here at the saloon. We start early in the morning and stay open until the street gets quiet at night. There isn't much more to say than that, it is just our daily work. We appreciate the people who keep coming back to see us.
