We are up on the 6th floor of the Dhun Building, right there at No. 827 on Anna Salai. Being in a tall building on one of the busiest roads in the city means we hear the traffic all day long. Good Eastern Trading Co. India Private Ltd. has been operating from here for a good while. The elevator in this building is a bit slow, so we often have to wait a few minutes just to get up to work. Once you’re inside our office, it’s mostly just rows of desks and a lot of filing cabinets. Trading involves so much paperwork that sometimes it feels like we are drowning in it. We deal with suppliers and buyers, trying to get everything coordinated so the goods move where they are supposed to go. Anna Salai is always a mess with construction or traffic jams, so getting to the office can be a bit of a headache in the morning. We usually stay late to finish up the logs and exports. It’s a very practical environment. We don’t have a fancy lounge or anything; it’s just a place to work. We talk a lot about the prices of things and when the next shipment is due at the port. Sometimes we look out the window at the city view, but mostly we are just busy with the phones and the emails. It’s a steady routine that keeps us occupied from Monday to Saturday. Even the tea vendor knows our order by heart because we’ve been here so long.
